The Cattle Genome Database (CGD) is intended as a fast access database for information on the genome of cattle. It grew out of the Cattle Genotypic Database which was designed to construct a genetic linkage map of the bovine genome (1,2). In addition to the genetic maps of chromosomes, information on loci, contact addresses, citations and comparative information will also be contained in this database.
There are currently more than 36 laboratories that have contributed to the Cattle Genotypic Database. Contributions to the Cattle Genotypic Database are made through the genotyping of the International Bovine Reference Panel which consists of full-sib cattle families from a wide range of sources. Genotypes are collected and linkage analyses processed at the Molecular Animal Genetics Centre. Regular updates of this map are circulated to contributors. With the publication of the latest map (2) it was decided that it would be important for this resource to be widely available to the gene mapping community. The latest version is always only available to the current contributors but the public map on the web site will be regularly updated.
This database is edited by Dr. W. Barendse at the CSIRO Molecular Animal Genetics Centre of the CSIRO Division of Tropical Agriculture. This CSIRO division is a merger of the CSIRO Division of Tropical Animal Production where the bovine gene mapping was initiated and the CSIRO Division of Tropical Crops and Pastures.
